About Us
Scotlean Pigs was established in Scotland in 1980 by a group of progressive producers who were interested in the potential benefits of cooperation and establishing their own marketing opportunities post farm gate. This decision came about through the beginnings of a reduction in the number of slaughter/processors in Scotland which led to ‘buyers’ market.
Scotleans growth was deliberate and soon spread well into England, developing sound and well structured marketing contracts with new and progressive abattoir/processing companies.
This growth allowed Scotlean to respond to members other needs and saw the development of purchasing activities aimed at reducing cost of production through more competitive arrangements, without compromising pig performance.
Recent changes to the size of the UK pig industry have encouraged greater
imports of pigmeat, often from Countries with lower costs of production.
This has increased the need for Scotlean's members to be ever focused on their
businesses, hence our full support for better farm recording and industry
benchmarking.
